HISTORY:

In March, 1998 Mamaca’s opened in a 38 square meter neo-classical building on Persephone street nest to the old municipal gas works. The area was a working-class neighborhood which had seen better times. The building itself had been a grocery store which also served wine and "mezethes" to its neighborhood customers. The cellar was filled with barrels of traditional retsina and rose wine. The old gas works had, by 1998, become a municipal cultural center where art exhibitions, concerts, and other events took place. Mamaca’s is the first restaurant to open next to the new cultural center.

Mamaca’s was an instant hit which the art and fashion crowd who continue to make up the largest part of their clientel.

In November, 1999 the partners purchased the adjoining building, a 30 square meter neo-classical house. And in January, 2000 the third section which features a terrace with views of the Acropolis was incorporated into the original structures.

The new section features a wine cellar which will begin operations in November 2001. This section will feature a wine bar serving "mezetzes" such as avgotaraho (smoked fish roe), cheeses and charcuterie. There is also a section set aside for cigar afficianados.
